Overview

Grab your bathers, slap on some sunscreen and head off to any number of great beaches across the state. The warm Victorian summers are the perfect excuse to drive out to the coast for ocean waves or grab a spot by the water at Brighton, Half Moon Bay and South Melbourne, all popular inner-city beach destinations.

Bay beaches

Situated in the middle of Australia's largest bay, Melbourne's bay beaches are ideal for a relaxing swim. Take a dip along Mornington Peninsula, where the calm waters meet golden sands. Drive further out to Phillip Island, where sheltered beaches on the north shores are ideal for a leisurely dip and some water-play with the kids.

Surf's up

Beach-hop along the Great Ocean Road, where there is something for swimmers of all abilities, from sheltered foreshores and quiet beaches to wild ocean breaks. Or plan a getaway at Gippsland's secluded coastal regions. Pristine locations like Inverloch, Wilsons Promontory, Cape Paterson and the famous Ninety Mile Beach offering great holiday fun and a slower pace.

Lifeguards and lifesavers patrol beaches during peak holiday times – swim only between the red and yellow flags. For further information on patrolled beaches check the beachsafe.org.au website or download the BeachSafe app.
