School's out and the fun begins. We've got a packed list of ideas for families and kids of all ages to make the most of the school holidays this winter.

Check out the holiday workshops and programs at NGV and ACMI, where kids can see what happens behind the cameras, add wacky sounds to movies and even make their own photographic flip book. Discover unbelievable creatures at the Fantastic Beasts exhibition at Melbourne Museum (or catch a thrilling film at IMAX while you're there). Zip up high above the city at Melbourne Skydeck for thrilling views, then sit back in a high-tech pod for an immersive 6D experience in the Voyager Theatre.

Winter is the perfect time to put on your favourite outfit and head to the theatre, and matinees of big-ticket shows like Mary Poppins or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will whisk both littlies and teens away to magical worlds. (Both shows are on a limited run, so don't miss out!) Speaking of magical worlds, Lightscape is an installation of colour and light that illuminates the Royal Botanic Gardens after dark and kids will love wandering the sparkling trails.

Since it's cold already, why not really get into the winter spirit by taking the kids for a twirl around the ice rink at O'Brien's Icehouse, with lessons available, or take them to see Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Wonder?

Feeling chilly? Warm up over a steaming bowl of dumplings or a sweet and gooey crepe at Grazeland (open Friday to Sunday) or wrap your fingers around a toasty mug of Campfire Hote Chocolate, complete with marshmallow and woodsmoke, at Mork.
