Memorial views
Take in sweeping vistas of Melbourne and beyond from the famous Memorial Cross and lookout, originally known as Geburrh in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. Visit the cross on ANZAC Day to take part in one of the country's most moving dawn services.
Enjoy the long walk up to Camels Hump, which is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges. Look out across to Hanging Rock and the northern rural landscape from the top.
Up the garden path
Some of the Mount Macedon's most immaculately preserved gardens are private and only open on select days, so check websites or time your visit for Open Gardens Scheme open days for the chance to peek behind fences.
The gardens of Forest Glade, Tieve Tara, Duneira Estate provide the perfect opportunity to amble among exotic trees, woodlands and gullies. There are riches to behold in the public parks and reserves as well, with manicured gardens accompanying more rugged environs.
Meander through the exotic plants at Stephen Ryan's Rare Plant Nursery and enjoy the scenic walking trail at Sanatorium Lake. Enjoy panoramic views, scenic drives, picnic facilities, walking trails, and cultural and historic sites of interest in Macedon Regional Park. Keep an eye out for koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and some 200 species of native birds.
Vines and table tops
Discover why Mount Macedon has long been considered a foodie destination. Start your day with a coffee from the Trading Post or pop in for Devonshire Tea at Top of the Range Tea Rooms. Pick up fresh seasonal produce from farm gates and provedores, and meet winemakers and taste wines at cellar doors, including Hanging Rock (be sure to grab the iconic Macedon Cuvee), Curly Flat, Cobaw Ridge, and Granite Hills.
Townies
Nestled at the base of Mount Macedon’s southern slope lies the village of Macedon. Take your two-wheeler on the train to town and ride through Macedon Regional Park, or follow the walking trail to Mount Macedon. Return to town to linger over a brew or fine foods at Olive Jones, Mr Macedon and Macedon Wine Room.
