Jack Holman

Jack Holman is a Yarra Valley cheesemaker, and he's now the owner and head maker at Stone & Crow Cheese Company. He loves the journey of making cheese, and particularly the art of maturation.

For Jack, food was always in the blood. He grew up on a farm in South Australia, sharing meals and cooking dishes that have been handed down from generation to generation. He's chased cheese all over the world, but now he's settled in the Yarra Valley. His cheeses are matured on-site at Rob Dolan Wines in nearby Warrandyte.

Jack loves camping and hiking with his family in the Yarra Valley and surrounds.

Here, Jack shares with us five of his favourite places.

1. Cathedral Range State Park

The Cathedral Range is a spectacular 7-kilometre ridge of sharply upturned sedimentary rock. Lace your boots to explore the different walking tracks, climb the peaks and enjoy views over forest and farmland in the valley below.

2. Badger Weir

Badger Weir Picnic Grounds is one of Jack's favourite picnic spots in the Yarra Valley. Stock up on incredible local produce (don't forget the Stone & Crow cheese) and head down Badger Weir Road for your hit of fresh mountain air and stunning scenery.

3. Maroondah Reservoir Park

Jack is a fan of the Maroondah Dam, which is set within a lush park of native trees. Bring a picnic and spread out on the lawns in the shade over summer, or set off along one of the walking tracks, looking out for native birds and wildlife.

4. Mt Donna Buang

Mt Donna Buang is a top spot, any time of year. In the warmer months, explore the Rainforest Gallery for spectacular canopy views along the skywalk on the southern slopes. The summit gets snow throughout winter – you can join families like Jack's who flock there to play and enjoy the toboggan runs.

5. Murrindindi Scenic Reserve

Jack recommends the cool, clear waters and incredible natural beauty of Murrindindi Scenic Reserve. It's packed with bushwalks, camping areas, a picturesque river for some summer splashing, and plenty of chances for birdwatching and fishing.

"For me to work and live in the Yarra Valley is a gift. I get to do what I love and be surrounded by the wilderness I love to be in."
