Overview
Wander through some of Australia's finest regional galleries housing important collections of respected Australian and international artists.
Regional centres
Thriving arts hubs Ballarat and Bendigo are home to two of Australia's oldest and largest regional galleries. Follow the buzz to the Bendigo Art Gallery and encounter significant international exhibitions and extensive European collections. Spend an afternoon exploring the Art Gallery of Ballarat and see an impressive collection of Australian art.
Discover fascinating works by contemporary and emerging artists at the Living Arts Space, housed in Bendigo's historic Post Office, or at The Lost Ones in an 1870s Masonic temple in Ballarat.
Castlemaine and Maryborough
A few kilometres south, in a beautiful art deco building, the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum contains a superb collection featuring works by many noted Australian artists. The Central Goldfields Regional Art Gallery in Maryborough is a great place to see regional works as the gallery supports local artists alongside their permanent collection.
In the community
The region is also home to a very strong arts community. Take the time to visit some of the many private galleries and local artist studios across the region. Visit artists' studios in and around Castlemaine in March during Arts Open, an opportunity to gain an insight into creative processes and purchase works directly from artists.
